Obtaining or extending an ADR certificate in Poland ends with a mandatory official exam before the Transportowy Dozór Techniczny (TDT) commission. For many drivers, especially those taking the exam in Polish for the first time, this process causes anxiety.
However, the TDT exam is not a lottery, but a clear verification of knowledge of the regulations and technical safety. In this article we will discuss the structure of the test, the most common traps in the questions, and effective tips that will help you obtain the required certificate without stress.
How is the TDT exam organized on ADR courses?
The exam is held as a written test immediately after completing the training course. The TDT commission provides exam tickets with answer options (choose one correct answer out of three).
Format and duration depending on the course type:
Basic course (Szkolenie podstawowe): 30 questions / Time: 60 minutes. To pass, you must answer correctly at minimum 20 questions (66%).
Specialized course - Tankers (Cysterny): 18 questions / Time: 45 minutes. You must answer correctly at minimum 12 questions.
Classes 1 (Explosives) and 7 (Radioactive): 15 questions each / Time: 30 minutes. Pass threshold - minimum 10 correct answers.
Top 5 typical driver mistakes on the TDT exam
According to our driver training statistics at the training center ADRDocs, over 80% of mistakes arise not from a lack of knowledge, but from inattention or careless reading of the conditions.
1. Careless reading of question parts (“NOT”, “EXCEPT”)
The TDT commission often formulates questions in reverse. For example: “Which of the following is NOT mandatory equipment of an ADR vehicle?”. The driver sees a familiar concept and picks the first option encountered, losing a point.
2. Confusing written instructions with the written instructions card
Many people confuse the driver's obligations when dealing with an emergency and the rules for using personal protective equipment (PPE). Remember: the emergency card according to ADR contains clear, standardized actions for each hazard.
3. Confusion in marking (Orange plates and hazard signs)
Common mistakes occur in questions about:
The difference between an empty uncleaned tanker and a filled one.
The meaning of doubling digits in the hazard code (for example, 33 - it is a flammable liquid with a high degree of hazard, not just fuel).
4. Ignorance of restrictions when driving through tunnels
Questions about tunnel restriction codes (B, C, D, E) regularly become a cause of failure. You must clearly understand which code applies to carriage in packages and which to tankers.
5. Language barrier
If you take the exam in Polish, legal and technical terminology can be confusing. That is why during training it is important to understand the terms in two languages in parallel.
5 tips to guarantee passing the exam on the first attempt
Learn not just the questions, but understand the logic of ADR. ADR rules are built on the logic of physics, chemistry and fire safety. When you understand why a dangerous load requires exactly such grounding or ventilation, the answer becomes obvious.
Go through fresh test databases. The ADR regulations are updated every two years. Make sure you train on the current TDT question database.
Use the elimination method. If you are unsure about an answer, discard obviously absurd options. In TDT tests, out of 3 options, usually 1 is clearly incorrect.
Do not rush to divide your time. 60 minutes for 30 questions of the basic course — that is more than enough (2 minutes per question). First answer the questions you are 100% sure of, and devote the rest of the time to the harder ones.
Take quality training with an instructor. Self-study of books rarely gives the needed result, because the exam assesses understanding of practical situations.
